I check Craigslist periodically in search of potential photo gigs but unfortunately, I've never had much luck with the online service because most posts are either sketchy or asking for a lot of work with little or no pay. Recently though, I came across a legit advert from Amberjoy who had posted an open-call for photographers to cover her 3rd Annual Femmes & Fellas Pin-Up Pageant. The details were honest and forthright and basically said, "Hey photographers, if you want to add to your portfolio and experience, sign up to attend (for free) our event and take all the photos you want." The post went on to state there was no compensation, but the photographer retains all the rights to the photos and can do what he or she wants with them.
I contacted Amberjoy and she replied promptly with all the pertinent information. A few weeks later I headed down to Fremont Country Club were I had a badge waiting for me and early access to the event and vendors. And voila! There I was shooting my first real modeling event complete with a catwalk!
I couldn't stay for the whole event which was a shame because The Delta Bombers and Rhythm Shakers were performing later in the evening... and you know how I love The Delta Bombers! But I did have a great time, got some decent pics and managed to do a little networking. Oh, and I added this event on my calendar for next year too!
